Lisandro Martínez stands by his criticism of Manchester United
Lisandro Martínez has clarified his remarks about Manchester United’s transfer planning after the club’s 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid. The defender acknowledged that frustration shaped the way he spoke after the match, but stressed that his comments reflected a genuine desire to see United competing for football’s biggest prizes again.
In the aftermath of the loss, the Argentina international suggested that the squad needed further investment and questioned the club’s recruitment work. His words drew attention because they were directed not only at the team’s performance, but also at the decisions being made behind the scenes.
Martínez later addressed the reaction in a social media post. He said the disappointment of failing to get the result United wanted had affected his tone. However, he did not withdraw the substance of what he had said: he wants the club to return to the level expected of one of the most decorated names in English football.
The 28-year-old also explained how deeply he feels the pressure of representing United. Those who know him, he said, understand how passionately he approaches the game, how committed he is to the club and how much he wants to win. When results fall short, that makes the disappointment especially difficult to accept.
At the same time, Martínez made clear that responsibility cannot be placed solely on the club’s leadership or transfer strategy. The players must deliver on the pitch, he said, and he sees himself as being at the forefront of that responsibility. His message was that the squad must demand more of itself and work together to help United climb back to the top.
That distinction matters. Martínez’s criticism was directed at the need for a stronger, more competitive team, but his follow-up comments also acknowledged that new signings alone cannot guarantee success. Recruitment can improve a squad’s depth and quality; performances, consistency and collective effort remain essential.
A defeat to Atlético Madrid can expose weaknesses across a team, from defending under pressure to creating chances and responding when a match turns difficult. For United, the result intensified questions about whether the squad has enough quality and balance to compete consistently against Europe’s strongest sides.
Martínez’s comments also point to the high expectations inside the dressing room. Players at a club of United’s stature are judged not only by individual displays, but by whether the team can challenge for major honours. His statement suggests that he views ambition and accountability as inseparable: the club must aim higher, while the players must take responsibility for meeting that standard.
The defender’s position is therefore not simply a retreat from his original criticism. He has explained the emotion behind his words while standing by the underlying concern. He wants Manchester United to strengthen its challenge, but believes the immediate task belongs to the players: improve their performances, raise their standards and work collectively towards restoring the club’s place among the leading teams.
