“This Is Only the Beginning”: Mourinho Reflects on Real Madrid’s Victory over Inter

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho described his team’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Inter as an important step, but insisted that the season still had a long way to go. The Spanish side secured three valuable points in a tense and open match, with Federico Valverde’s goal ultimately making the difference.

Speaking after the final whistle, Mourinho praised Vinícius Júnior’s attitude despite admitting that the Brazilian forward was not yet at the peak of his form. According to the Portuguese coach, the player’s determination and work ethic will eventually allow him to become decisive in major matches.

“Vinícius is working hard to become the player who decides games,” Mourinho said. “He is working harder than ever. It is not easy, but he is showing tremendous dedication and deserves enormous respect. His time to determine matches will come.”

The manager also highlighted the outstanding performance of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Mourinho suggested that the match could easily have produced a far higher score because both teams created numerous opportunities throughout the evening.

“It could have ended 6-5 or even 6-6. It was a crazy match, and I do not enjoy games like that,” he explained. “If Courtois was not the man of the match, then he never will be. His performance was decisive.”

Mourinho acknowledged that he did not make every tactical change he had initially planned. Inter’s intensity eventually declined, while Real Madrid had fewer players available to help control the tempo. That forced the coaching staff to adapt during the second half rather than follow the original plan exactly.

The winning goal from Valverde, however, was not viewed as a fortunate accident. Mourinho emphasized that the midfielder’s strike reflected both the player’s individual quality and the team’s overall performance.

“Valverde’s goal was not down to luck. It was a great moment for him and an excellent display from the team,” the manager said. “We played against a very strong side. Inter’s midfielders tried to create opportunities, but we managed to limit their influence. These are three extremely important points.”

The result carried additional emotional significance for Mourinho because Inter was the club he coached between 2008 and 2010. During that period, he guided the Italian team to Serie A success and the Champions League title. Despite now standing on the opposite side, he continues to hold Inter in high regard.

“Inter are still the best team in Italy,” Mourinho stated. “The only club I believe can get close to them is Roma. They dominate their domestic competition and have already reached Champions League finals. They are powerful, ambitious and extremely difficult to face.”

At the same time, Mourinho believes Real Madrid provides the ideal environment for pursuing major trophies. The club’s expectations are exceptionally high, but the coach sees that pressure as part of its appeal.

“Real Madrid is the perfect place to achieve great things,” he said. “Because of the World Cup, I have spent more time with some players than with others. We are still building. This is only the beginning, and there is a much longer road ahead.”

The victory could prove significant in the wider Champions League campaign. Three points against a club of Inter’s quality strengthen Real Madrid’s position during the league phase and provide valuable confidence for the matches ahead. However, Mourinho’s comments make it clear that he is not treating the result as a final achievement.

Real Madrid’s immediate challenge will be maintaining consistency. A single impressive performance is not enough in a competition where every point can influence the final standings. The team must continue improving its defensive organization while reducing the number of chances conceded.

Courtois’ contribution also underlined the importance of goalkeeper form at the highest level. While spectacular saves can secure points in difficult matches, relying too heavily on the goalkeeper may expose weaknesses that stronger opponents can exploit later in the tournament.

The development of Vinícius will be another important storyline. Mourinho’s comments suggest that the coaching staff are focused not only on his current statistics but also on his long-term progress. Greater efficiency in front of goal, improved decision-making and continued tactical discipline could turn him into one of Real Madrid’s most influential players.

Valverde’s contribution offered a reminder that Real Madrid’s attacking threat does not depend on one forward alone. Midfielders who can arrive late in the penalty area and shoot from distance give the team an additional dimension, particularly when opposing defenses succeed in containing the forwards.

For Inter, the narrow defeat demonstrated both their attacking potential and their vulnerability in open games. The Italian side created enough opportunities to score more than once, but leaving spaces for Real Madrid’s midfielders ultimately proved costly.

Mourinho’s overall message was one of cautious optimism. He celebrated the win, recognized the importance of the three points and praised several individual performances, yet he also stressed that the campaign remains in its early stages. For Real Madrid, the victory represents a foundation rather than a conclusion.
